Children: Our Most Precious Gemstones
“Mommy, I know why there are arrows on the road. They help you drive.”
Sounds logical, doesn’t it? These are words spoken by my four year old last week. It took me by surprise. It made me think. For one thing, on this often driven road, I’ve never even noticed the arrows he happened to be pointing out. How many other signs do I miss? Not just driving, but living?
Spiritually speaking, signs to guide us are everywhere. Some are bold, others are subtle. Some are meant only for us, yet others are relevant for everyone. Getting in touch with our ability to be spiritually discerning gives us more tools for seeing the signs. In a recent article in Discover Magazine a new study was presented. Scientists have done experiments that show we are capable of “seeing” with our touch, and “hearing” with our eyes, among other sensory feats that have seemed unbelievable until now.
How much more are we capable of? What do we limit ourselves to with negative or limitation thinking?
As guidance is available, are we open to seeing it, feeling it, hearing it? How magnificent is your own body, mind and soul? Are you in alignment with it?
I find that I am often telling people in sessions, like a broken record, about how much hope I have for the future. Yes, I know, we have terrible things happening every day, all over the world. Some feel the world is a worse place today than ever before. Yet there are more positive signs today than there were in my practice 5 years ago, 10 years ago. We can and do make the world a better place, just by living in it.
Two 18-year-old girls I happen to know beautifully illustrate one example of this:
My friend, John and I have something in common. We both have 18-year-old daughters. This year they were able to vote in a presidential election for the first time. They both go to college and have jobs. They are beautiful, responsible, terrific kids.
They both got tattoos this year. Both were reluctant to tell us, unsure of our response. Both placed a permanent message about hope for the future on their bodies. A heart, a peace sign, and the word “Hope”.
Now, I’m not condoning tattoos here. Don’t get me wrong. But the intentions by these two were not in defiance, self-mutilation or ignorance. They were well thought out. And in their words:
“What else constant do you have in this world except hope and love?”
“I choose peace, and every time I look at it, I know I live for peace even if the world seems to be at war.”
We know that children are our hope for the future. If this is the way the future sounds, I’m in.
I’d like to think that as parents, we have input into the gemstones that children grow into. I also believe it takes a village to raise a child. The kind of guidance we receive, we can give. And in it, the spiritual truths of Love, Hope and Peace prevail. We can all place them permanently in our hearts and live by them, if we are willing to fully embrace our own path to enlightenment.
